Living with Genital Herpes
When first diagnosed with genital herpes, a wave of different emotions can occur. Most people experience feelings of fear, anger, sadness and isolation, but these emotions subside with time. It is important to realize that you are not alone. It is estimated that nearly one in five adults has genital herpes and many of those infected live happy and fulfilling lives. In addition, having genital herpes does not mean the end of your sex life either, but it is important to use common sense and take precautions during intimacy.
Although there is no cure for genital herpes, managed care exists, but often symptoms are often triggered by and can become more difficult to deal with when coupled with feelings of stress and anxiety. Experts agree that reducing stress in one's life can reduce the incidence of breakouts in those who suffer from genital herpes. It is important to take a positive life approach to living with herpes and recognizing what triggers your own outbreaks. Once you understand the virus, treat it properly, and manage these triggers, you can better manage the disease.
Those living with herpes should shower at least once daily (twice during outbreaks). During outbreaks always clean yourself use a fresh washcloth, wash infected areas last and always place the washcloth in the laundry after use. When blisters and sores have opened, wash them with soap and water to kill active viral fluids that may be released.
During outbreaks, try to keep your infected areas as dry as possible and wear loose clothing to allow air to reach any sores or blisters.
