Herpes Transmission

Herpes Transmission
Unlike airborne viruses, herpes is only spread though direct contact. For example, if you suffer from the HSV-1 virus and have a cold sore, you can transfer the virus to another individual by kissing them. Similarly, those who have the HSV-2 virus (genital herpes) can spread the virus through intercourse. Oral sex can also result in a spread of the virus. The chances of spreading the virus are greatest just before and during an outbreak. Even more casual contact can spread the HSV virus, such as touching or caressing affected areas. HSV-1 can even be spread through a shared cigarette.

Infants and newborns are particularly susceptible to HSV viruses, which can be transferred to babies through pregnancy. Babies, just like adults, can contract the virus through direct contact. Because babies have weakened immune systems, the HSV virus can cause more serious health problems, so it is important that you do not kiss a baby if you have a cold sore.

It is not uncommon for self-infection to also occur. For example, if you touch a herpes sore, you can accidentally infect other parts of your body. It is easy to prevent self-infection by avoiding contact with outbreaks and washing your hands with warm soap and water if you do.

Although there have been reports of transmission of the HSV virus via hot tubs, soaps, towels, bed sheets and other inanimate objects, it is unlikely and often met with skeptesism, because the virus cannot live outside of the body for any extended period.
