Herpes Medications
It wasn't until 1985 that antiviral medications gave those who suffered from HSV hope in controlling the infection. Prior to that, people diagnosed with herpes were forced to handle outbreaks without relief.
Antiviral medications are the preferred treatment for HSV infections and are most successful when they are taken at the onset of any symptoms. However, there is no cure HSV and such medications are simply used to control and relieve symptoms.
Those who have frequent outbreaks (more than 6 per year) may consider suppressive therapy, which involves taking antiviral medication daily. Those with weak immune systems, resulting from leukemia, an organ transplant or AIDS, are at risk for more severe outbreaks and may need stronger medications. Also, women who are pregnant cannot take certain anti-viral drugs. So, it is important for those who carry the HSV virus to discuss treatment options with their physician before making a decision.
