Acyclovir is used to treat herpes infections of the skin, lip, and genitals, as well as shingles and chickenpox by decreasing pain and itching. It also helps in healing sores associated with such conditions. Acyclovir comes in a topical and oral form. Side effects may include burning, stinging, itching, or rash when ointment is applied and a headache, upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea or loose stools when taken orally.
